0.25cupbutter, softened (for layering and brushing)
to tastepowdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Allow the mixture to sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This activates the yeast.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt until evenly combined.
Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the yeast mixture, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Stir with a wooden spoon until a rough dough begins to form.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. This develops the gluten for texture.
Place the kneaded dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free area for approximately 1 hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.
Once sufficiently risen, gently punch down the dough to release any air bubbles. Roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle, approximately 1/4 inch thick.
Evenly spread the softened butter over the entire surface of the rolled-out dough. Fold the dough like a book, bringing one side over the other (into thirds). Roll it out gently again into a rectangle.
Repeat the rolling and folding process two more times, creating multiple layers to enhance the flakiness of the cruffins.
Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, slice the dough into long strips, approximately 2 inches wide.
On half of the strips, spread a layer of almond paste or Nutella. On the other half, spread raspberry jam. Place the jam-covered strip over the nut butter-covered strip and carefully roll them together to form a cruffin shape.
Place each rolled cruffin upright in a well-greased muffin tin, ensuring they stand tall. Cover the tin with a cloth and let the cruffins rise for an additional 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Once preheated, bake the cruffins for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and puffed.
After removing from the oven, brush the tops of the cruffins with melted butter for extra richness. Let them cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar for a sweet finish. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
Serve on a rustic wooden platter with additional raspberry jam or Nutella for dipping.
